Barn near Chichester

Cissbury is a unique and impressive country estate set in a remarkable location within the South Downs National Park. A private home that has been lived in by the Wyatt Family continuously for over 200 years and we are delighted to be able to share it with you.

AN ESTATE WITH A STORY

Cissbury Barns were built around 1813 by Napoleonic Prisoners as lambing yards to provide shelter during the spring lambing season. The shepherds lived in cottages in the surrounding woods. The Barns and yards were used for livestock until around 2000 and were converted for use as a wedding and events venue in 2016.

The track up to the Barns was once the main road thoroughfare taking tradesmen and locals from east to west across the South Downs towards Steyning and beyond. It is thought that there may have been a market place on the flat area that is now the car park for the Barns.

Hugh Penfold married Miriam Wyatt in 1781 and bought Cissbury from his uncle Willliam Groome in 1795 but never lived here. His son Hugh Penfold-Wyatt was living at Cissbury at the time the barns were built and that is why the Penfold crest of a tree and fence is used as our logo.

CISSBURY TODAY

Today Cissbury Estate still remains in the Wyatt family and is owned and run by Geoffrey and Etta Wyatt who moved here in the year of 2012 with their three children, Miranda, Hugh and Lucy.

The Barns quickly became a labour of love for Geoffrey and Etta as it was apparent that they no longer had a future for agricultural use, as they once had and needed to be adapted and given a whole new lease of life.

As Cissbury Estate is situated in a conservation area within the South Down National Park the conversion of the Barns was set to be a lengthy and passionate journey to ensure they could become spaces that would be enjoyed by many for years to come.

Geoffrey and Etta worked with the local Findon community and the South Downs National Park planning committee, until finally having their plans approved in April 2016. The necessary building works were completed and the first wedding took place at Cissbury Barns on the 28th August 2016.

The grounds and house on the Cissbury Estate play an important part of your Wedding day here at Cissbury.

A warm welcome awaits you at our beautiful family home when you meet the registrars or celebrant before getting married at the Barns and if time allows, have photographs taken on the impressive staircase.
